 Prevention is better
 than cure!

 Question:

I’m so bored of getting spots. I don’t get them all the time but when I do it’s double yuck! Surely there must be something I can do to stop getting them in the first place.

 Sandra, 17, London

 Our Expert:

Of course there is! And, as with everything, preventative action is the best approach – even if, like you, you only get spots every now and again. One of the best ways to prevent spots is to use an effective cleanser from the Clearasil range twice a day. Everyone’s skin type is different so read up on Clearasil products to find the ones that will work best for you.

To pop or not to pop?

 Question:

I can’t help popping or picking at my spots. Is that a bad thing?

 Brad, 18, Manchester

 Our Expert:

Afraid so. I know it’s tempting but squeezing spots can spread oil and bacteria as well as lead to scars. It can also make the area red, angry and a lot harder to cover up with concealer. If you really want to make a spot disappear (who doesn’t?) try Clearasil Ultra Rapid Action Invisible Treatment Cream – it’s specially formulated to leave your skin looking clearer in just three days. If you have squeezed, make sure you cleanse the area with a dab of Clearasil Daily Spot Control Deep Clean Cleanser. Don’t do it again!

 Single-handed combat

 Question:

How do I fight single spots?

 Helen, 14, Plymouth

 Our Expert:

Hit them hard! I think the best way to do this is with two Clearasil products that are specially formulated to target breakouts: Clearasil Ultra Rapid Action Invisible Treatment Cream. Clearasil Ultra Rapid Action Treatment Cream has been specially developed to calm and soothe to reduce redness and fight spots fast. Remember, however, that prevention is always better than a cure, so don’t forget to use an effective cleanser twice a day, every day.

 Dry skin and spots
 - double trauma!

 Question:

It’s not fair! I’ve got dry skin and spots. How can that be?

 Samantha, 19, Cardiff

 Our Expert:

I do sympathize – sometimes it does seem that life just isn’t fair! Have you been stripping your skin of oil in order to combat spots? For example, by washing your face too often or using skin products that are too harsh for your skin type? If that’s the case, your pores often start producing more oil to compensate – which leads to spots, even though your skin may seem dry. To break the cycle, try Clearasil Daily Deep Cleanse Conditioning Cream Wash – it’s specially formulated to help prevent spots without over-drying. Alternatively, switch to a product that’s been formulated for sensitive skin, like Clearasil Biactol Sensitive Skin Clearing Gel Wash.

 Scarred for life?

 Question:

My spot’s gone but I’m left with this dark patch that’s really ugly. Please tell me I’m not scarred for life.

 Kellie, 14, Manchester

 Our Expert:

Sometimes skin cells create extra pigment in areas that have been inflamed; leaving a dark mark even after the spot has healed. Don’t worry about your dark patch too much – it should fade in time; alternatively you can easily cover it up.!

 Does make-up cause spots?

 Question:

Like most of my female friends I wear make-up. I think it’s making my spots worst though. Is that true?

 Amanda, 17, Leeds

 Our Expert:

It depends what make-up you’re wearing. If you choose oil-free products that say they’re non-pore blocking (or non-comedogenic) you should be fine. If your make-up doesn’t say that it’s non-comedogenic than it may be clogging your pores, which is one of the causes of spots. Even if you use non-comedogenic make-up, you should make sure that you remove all traces of make-up at the end of the day. If you don’t do so already, try using Clearasil Deep Clean Pads to sweep away any leftover traces.

 Turn your back
 on blackheads

 Question:

Ugh! I’ve blackheads and they’re grim. How do I get rid of them? And what are they anyway?

 Simon, 14, Bradford

 Our Expert:

Blackheads appear when a pore becomes clogged with oil and dead skin cells. Interestingly, the black colour isn’t from oil or dirt; it’s from the dark pigment in your skin. I know it can be tempting to squeeze your blackheads but it’s really not a good idea. Squeezing can break the wall of the pore, releasing oil and bacteria into healthy skin and spreading the infection. It can also lead to scars.
Instead of squeezing – which, let me again stress, is a bad idea – you can help remove (and avoid) blackheads by keeping pores clear. The best way to do this is with an effective cleanser or scrub. Try Clearasil Blackhead Control Clearing Cleanser, Clearasil Blackhead Control Clearing Scrub or Blackhead Control Clearing Pads. To help ensure your spots don’t come back, carry on using these products even once they’ve disappeared. Remember, you can’t cure spots, only treat them.

 Just what the doctor
 ordered!

 Question:

I’ve tried everything but nothing works. My skin looks a state and it’s not getting better. I just don’t know what to do.

 Rob, 18, Portsmouth

 Our Expert:

You sound distressed and I can understand why – it can be hard if you suffer from spots, especially during your teens when you may be particularly self-conscious. The good news, however, is that, with your doctor’s help, you can clear up almost every case of severe spots. Make an appointment with your GP immediately and see what they can do to help.
